HINTS & TIPS
Pokamates is a versatile game that can accommodate various rule adaptations if the players choose to.

A. One or Two Packs

1. The default is one pack
2. Two packs may be used if desired. This will lead to a cramped board, but may introduce an interesting playing experience

B. Jokers
1. No jokers - default is no jokers in the pack
2. A joker can be used as a ‘blank’ in a hand to act as any card  required/specified . For example, If 4 of Spades is required, the joker assumes that suit and type for the whole game.
3. A joker can be used to move any one DS/TS marker to a square desired by the player into their line of play, thereby tripling or doubling their score for that round. Joker is then discarded and not used again in that game

C. Discard Pile

1. Default rules are to play a single card, when you can’t make a poker hand, for no score, thereby ‘discarding’ the card.
2. Ignore the use of discards. Where a player cannot go, he/she merely waits till their next turn to play.
3. Use a discard pile where the discarded card is placed face up and another player can swap out a card for the top discarded card when playing their turn.

D. Board Size
13 X 13 squares works very well. This can be reduced (e.g. 10 X 10)or increased (e.g. 20 X 20) for a different playing experience, however the default 13 X 13 fits most coffee tables and dinner tables. Use two boards to increase board size (if space allows!!). Or simply fold away columns not required (or block with a box or similar).

E. Number of Multiple Score (DS/TS) Squares
1. The number of DS/TS scorers on the board can be increased or reduced
2. Multiple score markers can be fixed (as in diagram above), or dynamic/random. Random means they can appear anywhere on the board with no particular order.

F. Deal 5,6, or 7 cards
When dealing, 5 cards is the norm. But try 6 or even 7 cards for a faster game (more cards in the hand means more options) but less skill required.
